"But Why"

"But Why" is a situational comedy that was inspired by a story I was told by a friend who experiences a very similar scenario where a complete stranger questioned her choice not to have children.

CONTENT WARNING - Swearing.

Genre: Comedy/Drama

Timing: 10-15 Minutes

Synopsis:

When Jane chose to spend her day at the beach the last thing she expected was someone to question her choice not to have children.

Cast: 2W

Productions History:

March 2024 - An audio production on the Theatrical Shenanigans Podcast - https://theatricalshenanigans.podbean.com/e/mini-shenanigans-episode-14-but-why-by-rachel-feeny-williams/

Recommendations:

“What a powerful piece. I absolutely feel for Jane and just loved the progression of the conversation. Rachel Feeny-Williams is a mast of crafting dialogue and making the characters easy to relate to. This is a fantastic read and one I hope many get their eyes on!”

(Cole Hunter Dzubak, Playwright)

“There's not much more oppressive than a nosy, self-righteous busy-body and Rachel Feeny-Williams has created a portrait of a full-blooded and horrifying one in Helen. It is a pity that Jane is called upon to defend her life choices and heartening that she does so so eloquently.”

(Paul Donnelly, Playwright)

“WILLIAMS’ piece “But Why” is truly masterful. A beautiful juxtaposition between the thoughts of what should happen before a woman is forty. This play will make you think. Make you want to fight. Make you want to take a side, yet feel for both characters. I don’t say this very often, but “Read. Produce. Repeat.” A lovely piece that any theatre should get their hands on, and one that two females would sure love to play. Brilliant. Well written. Well done.”

(Jackson Mackling, Playwright)

“Women who choose to be childless were once--and in some quarters still are--strongly vilified as unnatural beings who are threats to the social order and traitors to their gender. The persistence of that attitude, and the assumptions of those who hold it, are amply demonstrated by one of the women in the mini-debate over reproductive freedom that occurs in this play. Excellent work by Feeny-Williams, as always.”

(Donald E. Baker, Playwright)

“YES! I love a payback piece that takes a nosey and intrusive human to task. RACHEL nails the audacity of some people and handles them with ease. The dialogue is dead on in this wonderful short lay.”

(Debra A. Cole, Playwright)

“A relaxing day at the beach turns into an encounter with an overbearing stranger... This is an engaging play about minding one's own business and not needing to meet anyone's expectations but your own! A wonderful listen on the THEATRICAL SHENANIGANS podcast!”

(Evan Baughfman, Playwright)

"Betrayal"

"Betrayal" was written as part of a play a day challenge where the task was to create two characters and the idea that one of them is going to die and write for 30 minutes.

Genre: Drama/Thriller

Timing: 10-15 Minutes

Synopsis:

Dr Catherine Kenworth finds herself face to face with former patient Siobhan who is wielding a gun and accusing her of stealing her family. Can Dr Kenworth talk herself out if it?

Cast: 2w

Productions History:

August 2021 - Performed by Spoonie Theatre as a YouTube production. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hAAwFxIppE)

Recommendations:

“RACHEL FEENY-WILLIAMS sets up a confrontation between a doctor and a former patient, who believes there has been a big “Betrayal”. The interaction is gripping and will get and keep the audience’s attention.”

(Jack Levine, Playwright)

“BETRAYAL has an intriguing premise of a doctor-patient relationship that has taken a turn for the worse. The conflict is highly dramatic, and the dialogue is sharp. These characters offer two actors a chance to explore a high stakes situation with complex intentions. There are many boundaries that have been crossed, and Rachel Feeny-Williams creates a captivating story from start to finish.”

(Andrew Martineau, Playwright)

“I had the pleasure of hearing this read by very talented actresses at a Sunday playwright's event. WOW! This powerful piece will have audiences at the edge of their seats, and talking on the way home. Strong characters - tense moments - and altered realty. RACHEL is a a truly gifted story teller that understands dialogue, emotions, and the human condition.”

"Affairs"

"Affairs" was written as part of a play a day challenge in April 2022 inspired by the word 'Research'.

CONTENT WARNING - Swearing

Genre: Drama

Timing: 10 Minutes

Synopsis:

When Helen goes to confront Vivienne (the woman her husband is having an affair with) she gets a LOT more than she bargained for.

Cast: 2w

Productions History:

June 2023 - Audio Production on Theatrical Shenanigans - https://theatricalshenanigans.podbean.com/e/mini-shenanigans-episode-5-affairs/

January 2022 - 3rd Place in Surfside Playhouse 10-Minute Play Contest

Recommendations:

“Vivienne is one sharp businesswoman! She is more than ready for the confrontation with Helen, who has some issues with her business practices. Rachel Feeny-Williams doesn’t miss a trick (pun intended) in this nifty two-hander. Has Vivienne given Helen an offer she can’t refuse? That’s a question that will have audiences happily debating. And I would love to be part of the audience!”

(Morey Norkin, Playwright)

“Rachel Feeny-Williams’s wicked, wacky, and witty sense of humour is apparent throughout this one-act play. This hilarious piece is a roller coaster ride from start to finish. Two strong female roles and a delicate situation with some fun plot twist and turns all add up to a fabulous theatrical experience. Brava!”

(Cindi Sansone-Braff, Playwright)

“This naughty play has two juicy roles for female actors. Vivienne defies stereotypes and comes out on top. I would enjoy seeing this performed.”

(J. Louis Diamond, Playwright)

“There was obviously a lot of thought put into this magnificent little play. All of the circumstances and the what ifs and the how about clearly filled in. Also, the play has a magnificent sense of humour and style. You will enjoy every second of it.”

(Dan Taube, Playwright)

“It's so cool to come across a play like AFFAIRS that has such a strong historical precedent. Vivienne - as a descendent of the wily and manipulative courtesan championed by the ancient Roman comedy-writer Plautus - is hilariously always in control from the moment Helen enters her flat. I love the physical comedy of Vivienne sidestepping the blow from Helen and pulling her inside - as someone who's evaded the blow of a wronged wife a thousand times. It's also great that as she's finishing destroying Helen, Vivienne is making the bed and preparing for her next appointment. Outstanding job!”

(Charles Scott Jones, Playwright)

“Rachel has built a pair of remarkable characters. I think we all wish we had the confidence of Vivienne, but are too often Helen’s. The forethought and purpose behind Vivienne’s dialogue had me thinking that there might’ve been a 3rd option. The ambiguous ending after a high paced act/react, was perfect. Rachel’s writing is so sublime that when you expect a twist she waits and when you least expect it, she hits you with it. Fantastic script.”

(Joe Swenson, Playwright)

“Ah, what a tease, Rachel is a master in cliff hangers! Here she has written a darkly comedic two hander between a very streetwise 'professional' lady and a worried, angry wife, what ensues is a fun, awkward and downright clever stand off between the two. I think this play creates exciting roles for two enthusiastic actresses. As usual with this authors work, I'm left wanting more!”

"I Blame The Parents"

"I Blame the Parents" was written in April 2022 as part of a play a day challenge inspired by the word 'Glare'.

Genre: Comedy

Timing: 20-30 Minutes

Synopsis:

Mr Denterson has been a headmaster for many years and knows that parent/teacher meetings can be difficult. But when the parent in question is Medusa, it makes things a little more complicated.

Cast: 1m & 1w

Productions History:

Recommendations:

“This silly two-hander is a costume designer's dream, filled with clever quips and mythology-inspired in-jokes that had me laughing out loud! This clever piece takes liberties and imagines the gorgon Medusa attending a parent-teacher conference. While comedic, the play is also an interesting interrogation into the challenges of empathic perspective-taking, touching on everything from disability accommodation to the way we teach history in schools. Who is really the "monster" in this situation, and is compromise possible? This is certainly a fun yet thought-provoking read!”

(Aly Kantor, Playwright)

“This clever updating of the Medusa myth skewers two subjects simultaneously and does so with great humour: Medusa herself, and parenting. Turns out the ancient Gorgon is also a helicopter parent. She's not only a nightmare for Perseus (who now holds a place in her heart and her foyer) but for the beleaguered school administrators who have to deal with less lethal iterations of her sort every damn day. This is a great two-hander that would be terrific for any 10-minute play festival, especially one centred on mythology.”

(Adam Richter, Playwright)

“A super spin on the Medusa myth. Easy to stage and great fun for the costume and lighting designer. Love how "ability" is interpreted and is all a matter of perspective. Cannot wait to see what happens when the daughter goes to university!”

(Nora Louise Syran, Playwright)

“I Blame the Parents” by Rachel Feeny-William’s play is perfectly titled. This play deals with a director of a high school having a meeting with a parent whose daughter is giving the other students and teachers major issues. The real problem is the mother who is a gorgon. A gorgon is a being with snakes for hair, who has the power to turn anyone into stone, and has an enormous, righteous ego. The gorgon has a daughter who has inherited her genes, and she has raised her child with very limited boundaries. This upbringing have proven to be full of flaws that are not conducive to the norms of a civilized society, much less a school --- there is the dilemma of this play! Mr. Denterson is the Director of a high school, he has called Medusa Gorgon, a mother, to work out some of the school’s concerns regarding her daughter, Medissa. He tells mom that her daughter is unruly and disruptive in the classroom and causing harm to the other students. He adds that if her unruly behaviour does not change the school board will move to have Medissa expelled. Medusa is incensed, she finds all his complaints absurd and without merit. She tells Mr. Denterson that the problem is with the students and the teachers not Medissa. They are not giving her precious daughter a chance to blossom. The concerns in this play are clearly explained by the director, but mom is not listening or absorbing in any productive way the issues at hand. Medusa justifies her daughter’s behaviour as a cry for help and that Medissa is the poor misunderstood victim. “I Blame the Parents” by Rachel Feeny-Williams is another play from this creative playwright. This play is imaginative and impressive like many of her other plays. The Madusa character is so well written. Her dialogue portrays a strong, powerful woman that is ready for any inquisitions. She is also quirky, beautifully coifed, and charming. A strong female actress would appreciate the challenge of depicting her on the stage. Where Ms. Feeny-Williams gets her ideas to write such a variety of plots would make for a good play --- her body of work is amazing! Surfside Players 10-Minute Playwrighting Contest always looks forward to reading her distinctive and compelling plays. We look forward to her next instalment.

"It's Not Me"

"Its Not Me" was written as part of a play a day challenge in January 2022 inspired by the word 'meaning'.

CONTENT WARNING - Swearing.

Genre: Comedy

Timing: 10 Minutes

Synopsis:

Claire is trying to end her relationship with Kevin...but he's just not understanding her.

Cast: 1M & 1W

Productions History:

August 2022 - Produced by "The Actors Cove" in London as part of their Showcase

July 2022 - Produced by "Worcester Park Dramatic Society" in Epsom as part of their Summer Production

Recommendations:

“"Can we just give it up for Claire for walking out of her own place? I still want to know the "real" reason that led Claire to her decision. You can feel both of their frustration in this piece and it's a relatable topic that most of us have dreaded at some point in our lives. Great spin! ”

(Dana Hall, Playwright)

“In this slick two hander Rachel takes the "it's not you, it's me, but it isn't me because it's actually you" break up scenario to a whole new level. I'm still not sure what Claire's real reason is, and at the end of this I feel I am Kevin himself, well I certainly feel his pain! This will leave the the audience in a mild state of confusion and questioning her motives, which for this reader I love!”

(Christopher Plumridge, Playwright))

“Claire is a fascinating character as she faces what she wants and what she doesn't want. KEVIN's pain is palpable as he tries to navigate this relationship that seems to be doomed from the start. Poor sweet, Kevin. RACHEL FEENY-WILLIAMS is a MASTER at getting to the heart of each character she writes.”

(Debra A. Cole, Playwright)

“Claire and Kevin are clearly not on the same wavelength in this hilarious breakup short. All the reasons you’ve ever given or been told are here, and yet none of them seem to answer Kevin’s question… why? Rachel Feeny-Williams closes out this fun piece with the perfect ending. Who knew watching someone else break up could be so much fun?!”

(Morey Norkin, Playwright)

“"It's Not Me..." is a well-crafted play that offers a genuine portrayal of a struggling relationship. The primary theme revolves around the intricacies of romantic relationships and the difficulties in articulating one's feelings. In this short play, Rachel Feeny-Williams provides a fresh perspective on the challenges of communication and expectations in love.”

(James Perry, Playwright)

"One In Every Flavour"

One in Every Flavour was written as part of my 'Worth a Thousand Words' play a day challenge that I completed in June 2022. The aim of the challenge was to write a play inspired by a picture and the picture for this day was a 99 ice cream.

Genre: Comedy

Timing: 10-15 Minutes

Synopsis:

Mandy thought there was no one who could ever make ice cream dangerous…and then she met Giles!

Cast: 1m & 1w

Productions History:

June 2023 - Audio Production by Theatrical Shenanigans - https://theatricalshenanigans.podbean.com/e/mini-shenanigans-episode-7-one-in-every-flavour/

Recommendations:

“It's certainly possible to take an obsession too far, as Giles certainly does. The build as ice cream flavours become progressively more ... novel is most amusing. ”

(Paul Donnelly, Playwright)

“My God, this was a riveting piece to read. As writers, we've all felt the panic of the blank page. Rachel Feeny-Williams is probably no exception (though sometimes I think she has made a deal with the Devil for non-stop inspiration) but she powers through and produces work of such high quality, that you'd never know it. The characters here feel like they stepped out of real life and I defy you not to get caught up in their needs and desires. This was wonderful and gets my highest recommendation!”

(John Busser, Playwright)

“Ewwww.....While I am pretty open to new culinary creations, this ice cream inventor may be more than I can handle. This disgusting and entertaining short pay will have audiences questioning their bravery with new flavours.”

(Debra A. Cole, Playwright)

“I may never eat ice cream again. Unless it's vanilla. An unsuspecting customer gets way more than they bargained for when they accidentally step into an experimental ice cream station. Absolute fun for two actors who want to play close to over the top. This was so good I'm still queasy.”

"The Ultimate Christmas Question"

The Ultimate Christmas Question was written as part of my 'Worth a Thousand Words' play a day challenge that I completed in June 2022. The aim of the challenge was to write a play inspired by a picture and the picture for this day was the picture you see here.

Genre: Comedy

Timing: 10 Minutes

Synopsis:

Maggie & Jeff are facing the volatile world of a bind date with the added perils of trying to choose a Christmas film for their date.

December 2022 - Audio Production by Gather by The Ghost Light - https://www.gatherbytheghostlight.com/ep-42-the-ultimate-christmas-question/

Recommendations:

“Recently I conducted an event called Christmas Shorts. The Ultimate Christmas Question by Rachel Feeny-Williams was a part of that programming and it went phenomenally well! With a great plot, written with vibrant dialogue, and well developed characters, I greatly enjoyed directing it. Major kudos go to the playwright who knitted this story together with such skill! I hope to produce more of Feeny-Williams' work in the future.”

(William Prater, Director of Crash Course Theatre Production)

“What a sweet activity to plan for a first date: watching a Christmas movie together. But as each of them objects to the other's suggestions, Maggie and Jeff discover their tastes in, and even definitions of, "Christmas movie" are diametrically opposed. And that's even before they finally get to the ultimate question of whether "Die Hard" qualifies. The two of them seem irredeemably incompatible. But you know what they say about the mutual attraction of opposites. Rachel Feeny-Williams's thoroughly amusing meet-cute rom-com is a lovely little gift for the holiday season.”

(Donald E. Baker, Playwright)

“Ah, it wouldn't be Christmas without the age-old question, IS Die hard a Christmas movie? And Rachel Feeny-Williams provides a comical take on trying to find that out, with Maggie and Jeff having a delightfully batty debate on the merits of a multitude of cinematic Christmas films. I always like Rachel's dialogue as it rings so true, yet never sounds run of the mill. And I think practically every audience member would find their argument eminently relatable. Funny, frothy and feisty. And for the record... OF COURSE IT'S A CHRISTMAS MOVIE. Hans Gruber even says so in the movie dialogue.”

(John Busser, Playwright)

“Loved this piece. When Ms. Feeny-Williams established the premise, I was waiting for certain payoffs and was not disappointed. (Though one character's attitude on the Muppets certainly made for a VERY unsympathetic character immediately for this Muppets Lover. :) ) After some good back and forth, the ending is humorously satisfying. A very funny look at what makes a Christmas movie and why we'll probably never agree on that very subject. But it's OK... as this play's ending intimates, there is still hope. :)”

(Brent Alles, Playwright)

“I produced an audio play version of this script on the radio theater podcast GATHER BY THE GHOST LIGHT (https://www.podpage.com/gather-by-the-ghost-light/ep-42-the-ultimate-christmas-question/). Rachel Feeny-Williams has captured a real life moment and written it into this hilarious play. I have overheard this same debate many times over the years and it was so fun to read script and Rachel's comedic take on this argument. Very relatable with great dialogue!”

(Jonathan Cook, Producer & Host of Gather by the Ghost Light Podcast)

"Strangers and No Train"

Strangers and No Train was written as part of my 'Words, Words, Words' play a day challenge in September 2021 where the aim was to write a play a day inspired by one word and the word here was 'Station'.

CONTENT WARNING - Swearing and references to sexual abused.

Genre: Drama

Timing: 10 Minutes

Synopsis:
Bert has worked on the trains for most of his life only to now be cast aside for a job that could be done by a signpost. He is feeling without purpose, until he meets Alice.

Cast:1m & 1w

Productions History:

May 2023  -  Audio production produced by Theatrical Shenanigans - https://theatricalshenanigans.podbean.com/e/mini-shenanigans-episode-3-strangers-and-no-train/

Recommendations:

“ This is a touching short two hander where two characters meet from worlds apart, both are portrayed perfectly, Bert the old fashioned gent and Alice the damsel in distress. Rachel has a unique talent for recording snapshots in time and this is an excellent example. I can imagine Bert and Alice chatting all through the night!”

(Christopher Plumridge, Playwright)

“This delightful, unconventional brief encounter on an out-of-service train platform says so much about human connection and human kindness, as well as about generations, age and obsolescence, and the value we sometimes fail to place on the things that should matter most. We should all strive to be more like Bert, a gentle soul and one of nature’s true gentleman. This short play is heart-warming in all the right ways. Lovely in every way.”

(Rober Weibezahl, Playwright)

“Yeah... we need more folks like Burt in this world. A very lovely, touching moment for two disappointed souls who manage to find each in the most unlikely of places. Tis will add a tender highpoint to any evening of shorts. Rachel's done it again.”

(George Sapio, Playwright)

“I wish there were more Bert’s in the world. Tried and true and so kind. A lost young woman runs into him on a lonely, non-active train station. She’s stuck, but he makes the best of it for her. A lovely chance meeting.”

"The Good Seats"

The Good Seats was written as part of my 'New Year, New Words' play a day challenge in January 2022 where the aim was to write a play a day inspired by a different word and the word this day was 'premium'.

Genre: Comedy

Timing: 10 - 15 Minutes

Synopsis:

Cast: 2w

Productions History:

July 2023 - Live Production by Next Generation Theatre, Cullompton, Devon, UK

May 2022 - Audio Production by RFW Scripts - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKAOgdtyUOc

Recommendations:

“ Well! This is the dishiest dishing that’s ever been dished! All served poolside like a high-octane resort pina colada! Louise has all the tea and Kate’s cup is ready to be filled! A well-observed social satire full of exquisitely individuated details about the neighbours and the secrets polluting the airs they put on. Great roles for two actresses (I couldn’t help picturing Nicola Walker and Sarah Lancashire from LAST TANGO IN HALIFAX.) The familial interjections keep the proceedings grounded but the bitchy gossip and social commentary soars! ”

(Scott Sickles, Playwright)

“Two suburban housewives attempt to keep their children and spouses corralled while at the same time comparing gossip about their friends and their places in the poolside pecking order. The dialogue is sexually explicit and delightfully catty and, one suspects, only slightly exaggerated. It would be a hit in any evening of short plays.”

(Donald E. Baker, Playwright)

“This is a delicious play that brings the politics, intrigue and gossip of practically every community to vivid and hilarious life. Feeny-Williams cleverly creates an entire chaotic poolside environment -- including a hunky lifeguard, misbehaving children and hapless husbands -- primarily through the dialogue of two women. Speaking of those two characters, what bonkers fun they are!”

(Nathan Christopher, Playwright)

“What a fabulous play by the dialogue master Rachel Feeny-Williams! Rachel does an amazing job of pushing the envelope between Louise & Kate and yet it feels like every day conversation poolside. “Just because I made my purchase doesn’t mean I can’t see what’s on the shelves.” A new favourite line. Brilliant!”

“This is the first play in Rachel Feeny-Williams's collection "My Chatter" and it starts her short comedy play collection off with a bang! I particularly appreciated the theatre focus of the piece. It focuses on the "character" Rachel (hmmm...) and her drive to stay true to herself, her writing. Why is it some people who are so good with words socially find themselves with foot-in-mouth syndrome?! Funny!”

(Nora Louise Syran, Playwright)

“Sometimes we wish for something to happen, and then when it’s about to take place, we might get cold feet. “The Meeting” gives us an interesting view of a writer’s torment of trying very hard to get their play produced, and then, questioning the intention of the potential Producer.”

(Jack Levine, Playwright)

Recommendations:

“Don't Scream is an excellently humorous and surprising play that would be a pleasure for any pair of actors to dig into. Rachel Feeny-Williams pits two temperamentally opposite characters against each other in a scenario that could easily turn sour, but she navigates them through a conversation that bound to get audiences giggling--and closes the play out on a tantalizing, refreshing note.”

(Sam Heyman, Playwright)

“It's a good thing this play isn't called "Don't Laugh," because we'd all fail. This is an exceedingly clever play about a woman who is being robbed at home and can't scream. (Well, it possibly wouldn't be wise in any event.) But, the lack of a scream becomes a funny psychological discussion between thief and victim, and I will not give away anything about how it ends. I applaud Ms. Feeny-Williams' comic instinct and the build up to the ending. If you do scream, it will be with laughter.”

(Bruce Karp, Playwright)

“A delightful two-hander built on a great prompt: what if someone is physically unable to scream and they are confronted with a terrifying situation? In this smart scene, Alice comes home to find Dan robbing her house. Her response? "Oh." As Dan digs in more and more to Alice's physical inability to scream, the burglary is forgotten and the curiously British sense of decorum takes over. I hate to say that this would be a 'scream' to produce, but it really would.”

(Toby Malone, Playwright)

“Too much work makes Jack, or in this case, Matthew, a dull fellow. But once he drifts off into dreamland, about a century and an ocean away, he meets bubbly birthday girl, Ginny. Their sweet, platonic relationship will have you smiling throughout this delightful play. The ending is especially satisfying as Matthew learns there is such a thing as work-life balance. Thank you, Rachel Feeny-Williams, for this sweet dream.”

(Morey Norkin, Playwright)

“A spoiled rich girl meets a workaholic family man. Yep, heard it before...but not like this! Feeny-Williams cleverly weaves a little morality play where the characters, in understanding one another, take stock of their own lives and motivations. Adding another layer to her story, she has them travel across decades to meet in a dream, or perhaps a time shift where we find them giving and taking advice to rewind and reset their lives and loves. The interplay is superb!”

(David Patton, Playwright)

“A feel good play about two lost souls separated by a century and an ocean who find each other in their dreams. Dream Girl is an original take on time travelling with two well defined characters - workaholic Brit Matthew grappling with 21st century frustrations and good time girl, flapper Ginny about to enter into a marriage of convenience in 1920s’ New York. Feeny-Williams neatly manages their platonic romance through several smooth scene changes and progressions in a compelling piece of theatre.”

(Alice Josephs, Playwright)
