"Mother Knows Best"
"Mother Knows Best" was written as part of my "Worth a Thousand Words" play a day challenge in June 2022 where the aim was to write a play inspired by a picture and the picture for this day was a cup of tea (or coffee) overflowing.

“What do the British do as soon as they have passed away? They have a nice cup of tea of course! In this funny, dark humoured ghost story, Rachel has cleverly avoided the cliche storyline and thrown all three of her characters into the pot to fight it out. This would be great fun to stage. Another clever and fun play from this prolific playwright!”
(Chris Plumridge, Playwright)

“When should a mother let go? When must she let her son live her own life? Never, according to the character of Rosemary. A lovely humorous piece that pushes a son to the extreme. Great relationships between mum and the ex girlfriend too. I hope she does burn that chair!”
(Lindsey Brown, Playwright)

“A fun little comedy about afterlife and death and keeping traditions in the English way. Rachel Feeny-Williams does no wrong here as a Mother and girlfriend fight it out for the attention of a son/boyfriend who's a bit shaken and stirred by his Mother's interference, seeing as it comes after her funeral. With fast paced dialogue and an offbeat plot, this one is a winner. And for an added treat, listen to it on Rachel's brand new Theatrical Shenanigans Podcast like I did!”

“Interview Terminated very much bought me back to my childhood, sat watching Tales of the Unexpected with my parents and the sting in the tail of Rachel Feeny-Williams' well crafted play very much lived up to the classic TV series. Great!”
(Christopher Plumridge, Playwright)

“It would be too easy to call this mystery simply a British Law and Order, because the character development and timely revelations are handled deftly by Rachel Feeny-Williams. The realistic dialogue and story are a draw and this could well-anchor a night of one acts.”

“"No More Tea?" had me cackling! The characters are delightful, and the dialogue is fast and sharp. I particularly enjoyed the moment where they discussed different types/flavours of tea (as an avid tea drinker, I won't say I disagree with Brian!). A fun 5-minute play by Rachel Feeny-Williams.”
(David Lipschutz, Playwright)

“RACHEL FEENY-WILLIAMS found a way to make a simple get together for a cup of tea and coffee to be a witty and wonderful short piece. “No More Tea” will delight audiences and be a favourite in a short play festival.”
(Jack Levine, Playwright)

“As an American, I can still relate to the over-the-top demands of Brian and his tea requirements. Everyone has something that has to be just perfect. For Brian, it is tea. And it really is a pretty simple request, it just goes all sixes and sevens on him! Derek's last line kills!”
(Jacquelyn Floyd-Priskorn, Playwright)

There is no better symbol of Englishness than the Tea Shop. If you frequent them or if you've ever worked in one, you will identify with Rachel's short masterpiece in equal measure. It would be a perfect training aid for hospitality staff, in how to deal with the "customer from hell". One of ten plays published as a collection, under the title of "My Chatter" https://www.rfwscripts.co.uk/product-page/my-chatter-10-original-comedy-plays"
(Tony Vale, Playwright)

“Let me spill the tea on this fun short... As a tea room employee, I must say, Lilly is not getting paid enough to deal with Brian's particularities. No More Tea? by Rachel Feeny-Williams is a silly-goofy customer service comedy. Full of distinct and memorable characters and tongue-in-cheek wit, this play is top tier!”
(Hannah Lee Defrates, Playwright)

“I listened to the Shouting in the Evening audio production of this play and it was an absolute riot! I knew some folks here in the States that have Strong Opinions about tea and coffee, and found that warm beverages served incorrectly served as a metonym for Everything Wrong with This Country. And I would be stuck leaving a hefty tip as an apology. This is a truly funny (and cringe inducing) play. Rachel Feeny-Williams has a gift for writing biting dialogue and creating richly drawn characters.”
(John Patrick Bray, Playwright)
"Good Boy?"
"Good Boy?" was written as part of my 'Let's Write' play a day challenge in April 2021 where I wrote a play a day inspired by a GIF, this particular one being a dog with a slightly intimidating look on his face.

Timing: 25 Minutes

Synopsis:
When Jenny brings her new man home, Twinkle (her dog) decides that he has to go!

Cast: 1m, 1w & 1 m/f(Twinkle the dog can be played by either a man or woman)

Productions History:

Recommendations:

“This is the fourth play in Rachel Feeny-Williams's collection "My Chatter" and it's so much fun! It reminds me of the French film "Didier" by Alain Chabat but is even funnier! Well done! We root for all of the characters --four footed and bipeds alike-- and that's how it should be!”
(Nora Louise Syran, Playwright)

“What a fantastic play written from the pet's perspective. At points you root for Twinkle, you root for Gregory, and root for the next confrontation. This play has it all, tension, comedy, drama, and finally a resolution that you didn't know you wanted at points, but once it happens, you love it. I highly recommend this play.”
(Joe Swenson, Playwright)

“What a fun romp! Rachel Feeny-Williams' short play trots right along as jealous Twinkle devises plots to rid his home of Jenny's human boyfriend. Twinkle deserves some kind of award as one of the most sardonic-voiced canines to ever trod the boards. If you stage "Good Boy?", someone gets to play a great role as an over-sized dog in an oversized doggie basket bed. Still trying to picture the right breed -- Pug? Corgi? Bassett Hound?”
(Jo Brisbane, Playwright)

“As a dog owner, I looked up from reading this piece and my dog...I swear!! ... was looking at me rather strangely! Yes, I know, we all think that our dogs are so very smart and know every word...but what if they did? What if they did and were smarter too? That's the basis for this clever piece where Feeney-Williams has Twinkle the dog taking charge and hounding out an unsuitable suitor. ”
(David Patton, Playwright)

“Twinkle, a Machiavelli among dogs, enters into a battle of wills with Greg, Jenny's new love interest. Twinkle has a history of disliking Jenny's choices of gentleman companion (there is mention of a Jeremy from earlier)--it's plain he'd prefer a celibate mistress whose attention is focused on him, and full run of the house he considers his. The dislike is mutual; Greg is hoping to see Jenny give up Twinkle for him. Where will it end. Good play, yes, yes you are.”
(Martin Heavisides, Playwright)

“I love dogs. I love actors playing dogs almost as much as I love dogs. In this comedy, poor Greg has to match wits with Twinkle, a dog who confides in us that he is very much the master of his domain. Without giving away too much (I love where this play goes), Twinkle proves to us that he can outwit any man in order to make sure Jenny can be his and only his. This is a fantastic three-character play that would provide a lot of fun for three actors - especially the one who gets to play Twinkle!”

"First Draft"
"First Draft" was written as part of my "Worth a Thousand Words" play a day challenge in June 2022 where the aim was to write a play inspired by a picture and the picture for this day was an Axe buried in a tree.

Genre: Comedy
Timing: 15-20 Minutes

Synopsis:
Johnathan Teary has been an author of old school style horror stories for many years. There’s just one problem, his characters hate them! And now, they have had enough!

Cast: 2m & 6W

Productions History:

September/October 2023 - A Semi Finalist in the New Works Festival, Santa Monica, USA.

Recommendations:
“Good writing brings the words to life to a reader. Great writing brings the characters to life, and in THIS case, they ain't going back to the page. Rachel Feeny-Williams is always up to giving her audience that extra oomph! when it comes to her plays. A terrific romp through the creative process and how characters can take on their own agendas if given half a chance. I'd love to see this staged, but make sure the characters don't get carried away (literally in Jenna-may's case) and come back for the curtain call.”
(John Busser, Playwright)

“I had the pleasure of reading for Jenna-May, note the hyphenation, if our Sunday playwriting group. I adored the "breaking of the fourth wall" for a playwright. There is nothing better than stale and cookie-cutter characters who find their voices. RACHEL FEENY-WILLIAMS, note the hyphenation again, is a master of natural dialogue, biting humour, and entertaining audiences. A FABULOUS SHORT PLAY!”
(Debra A. Cole, Playwright))

“When I first started reading this play I thought to myself, this would be better suited as a movie due to its nature, although as I kept reading I thought "eh, keep it as a play, that what it is, right?"...and low and behold I was mesmerized by the story of these characters; one that could keep you going, yet leave you wondering what could happen to them as time goes on. I surely hope 'Johnathon Teary' (Rachel) does a "second draft" because I'd love to see where Masked Killer (Kevin) and Jenna go next!”
(Jaxson Mackling, Playwright)

"Fences"

Synopsis:
Having been dragged to a new house and school in the middle of the school year, Drew is less than thrilled by his new home. That is until he meets his new neighbour Penny.

Cast: 1m & 2w

Productions History:

Recommendations:

“Youth, loneliness, and chocolate bring drastically different teens Drew and Penny together across a simple backyard fence. When trouble presents itself, will Drew be able to help his new, sheltered friend? Maybe not for Penny might not be telling the whole truth. A great piece for two young performers to bring to life... or death as it may be in this case.”
(Debra A. Cole, Playwright)

“What seems to be a sweet, tentatively developing relationship between a somewhat rough teenage boy and a very proper home-schooled teenage girl seems to reach a breaking point when it is suggested that the girl has been beaten by her over-protective, violent father. But the ending of this cleverly designed short introduces a twist that casts doubt on all the earlier proceedings. I won't spoil the ending here, but it will leave you wondering about all you have been seeing. Good work, Rachel Feeny-Williams.”
(Larry Rinkel, Playwright)

“A lonely and embittered young man strikes up a friendship with the girl next door. It gives him joy and sustenance. As the friendship deepens he learns dark things about the young woman's life. Just as he attempts to rescue her, the darkest secret of all emerges and he is left to question everything that came before. A finely crafted portrait of young romance turned on its head with great skill.”
(Paul Donnelly, Playwright)

“RACHEL FEENY-WILLIAMS is one of the most prolific playwrights I have had the pleasure to meet. I always enjoy her fine work. In “Fences”, we are treated to a developing teenage romance, then a shocking development, followed by an unforeseen ending. You will find this play well worth reading. Like many of Rachel’s work, this gem will be an enjoyable addition to any play festival.”

“Do we ever really know the people in our lives? A tense short drama highlighting how our deepest suspicions can be confirmed if we allow them to be. Two encounters which reveal how sisterhood and standing up for each other as women can be a complicated thing. Listen to the audio production on Theatrical's Shenanigans"
(Nora Louise Syran, Playwright)

“"Need to Know" serves as a poignant reminder of the subtle and treacherous essence of secrets. As a wife grieves, mourning not just the loss of her husband but also the image she held for him, another woman grapples with the trauma he imposed. This narrative boldly underscores the imperative to believe survivors. (A reminder: Your experience of someone only represents a singular perspective on a truth and nothing more- very powerful.) The unexpected twist at the end adds a beautiful layer to the narrative. BRAVA Rachel.”
(Dana Hall, Playwright)

“Both women in this story have very real, very believable and strong feelings at odds with one another. In a very uncomfortable, but necessary confrontation, we learn a lot about what some people can turn a blind eye to in order to continue to pretend things are fine. But the twist at the end leaves me wishing I had a friend like Girl 1, and also, I hope to never cross anyone like Girl 1! A true pillar of justice! By any means necessary.”
(Jacquelyn Floyd-Priskorn)
"Passion Therapy"
"Passion Therapy" was written inspired by the idea of what happens when people don't deal with/don't have emotions.

CONTENT WARNING - Sexual content

Genre: Comedy
Timing: 10-15 Minutes

Synopsis:
Giles & Mary were given couples counselling vouchers for their wedding anniversary but they don't think they have a problem, because they don't discuss their feelings. But for them, and Dr Wilkinson, they are about to discover how passionate therapy can be.

Productions History:

(UPCOMING) July 2024 - Live production by Next Generation Theatre, Cullompton, Devon

Recommendations:

“It's amazing what showing a little enthusiasm can bring to the surface! Rachel Feeny-Williams' PASSION THERAPY is a hilarious look at one couple's passionate re-ignition at the hands of a beleaguered therapist who just wants to get through the day and save up money for her cruise vacation. Sparks take some time to start flying, but once they do, audiences--and the characters alike--will have a firestorm on their hands! Feeny-Williams' character writing is strong here; I loved Dr. Wilkinson's muttered asides.”
(Sam Heyman, Playwright)

“I don't often laugh out loud while reading comedies, and even less while reading a ten-minute comedy. Thank goodness for "Passion Therapy" for breaking that streak. Starting from the moment the mild-mannered (almost full on repressed) couple enters the office, the audience is deftly brought along their transformation. Decidedly not for kids (unless you want to answer a whole bunch of questions), it is also an interesting take on what may happen when people allow their feelings to get the better of them. I would love to see this staged. I would love to be the one to stage it.”
(Brian Cern, Playwright)

“What a funny premise to have a daughter give their parents a voucher for counselling! This sets the scene very well and I commend Rachel for giving the Doctor such a strong personality of their own. This is a fun play of which you won't see the ending coming. A bad day for this doctor to give up smoking, but things are looking 'up' for this couple!”

“RFW has created a role for a woman that is usually given to men. Strong, dangerous and extremely intellectual. A Hannibal Lecter, full of riddles and rage. A terrific character study!”
(Jacquelyn Floyd-Priskorn, Playwright)

“A successful woman bumps off her husband of many years seemingly out of the blue...I know what you're thinking: "Why?" Well...Maybe you should just wait until the end. This dark comedy is tricky and clever with a game built upon riddles and questions that can only be answered with more questions. This play is a treat for strong actors and intelligent audiences.”
(Hannah Lee DeFrates, Playwright)

“Leave it to RACHEL FEENY-WILLIAMS to take a simple prompt of "write a riddle play" and make a wonderful psychological thriller that will be pure magic on any stage. The banter between two of the characters is pure joy to experience. Don't ask me WHY, but just read it!”

"You Think You Know"
"You Think You Know" was written as part of my "Worth a Thousand Words" play a day challenge in June 2022 where the aim was to write a play inspired by a picture and the picture for this day was of a battered looking old sofa.

“If the walls (or the sofas) in some houses could talk, they'd be able to write best-selling novels. Tales of life, love, anger, fear, sadness, joy, and...more -- a historical compilation of insight into the lives of those who crossed the threshold of the front door. Playwright Rachel Feeny-Williams takes us on a brief journey into the lives of those at 63 Corigan Avenue, and a history that Katherine, the granddaughter of the owner of the house, wasn't necessarily prepared to learn about. Another great play by Feeny-Williams that will make you smile for sure!”
(Randy Hunt, Playwright)

“The fun of this piece is that, ostensibly, the "main character" is not who you think...in more ways than one! I love the way these two quick-witted spouses slowly reveal more and more about the off-stage character as the play goes on. The "mystery" at the center of the piece keeps the audience engaged, wondering what wild "secrets" we'll learn next! The twist is exquisite! Laugh-out-loud banter consistently meets high emotional stakes, making this a fun and compelling one-act! Lots of fun for both actors and audiences!”
(Aly Kantor, Playwright)

“When Katherine starts to clean out her deceased grandmother's house, she discovers an ever-escalating chain of gobsmacking surprises about what sort of woman she was and the amazingly wild life she apparently led. It's all very overwhelming--until the wonderful twist at the end. A very neat and funny comedy.”

Third Place in Surfside Playhouse
10 Minute Play Contest
November 2021
"Emotionless"
"Emotionless" was written as part of my 'words, words, words' play a day challenge in September 2021 where the idea was to write a play a day inspired by a word, and this word was Emotion.

Genre: Comedy
Timing: 15-20 Minutes

Synopsis:
David thinks his wife Mary is far too emotional and an embarrassment to him. So, to make him happy, she has her emotions removed!

Cast: 2m & 1w

Productions History:

November 2021 - 3rd Place in Surfside Playhouse 10 Minute Play Contest

Recommendations:
“At first I thought David was kind of a jerk, but the rollercoaster of emotions Mary takes us on in the first couple pages alone is indeed exhausting. But, as dramatic as she is, this is WHO she is. And unfortunately, it takes a major swing in the opposite direction to remind David that is exactly what makes her the woman he loves. A fun and expressive two-hander.”
(Jacquelyn Floyd-Priskorn, Playwright)

“This lovely play really highlights the warning 'be careful what you wish for' , chuck that in with a modern culture of TV and online shopping you have a recipe for some fun disaster! Rachel tells this perfectly. It left me wondering if there really should be a university called "I'm a medical guy.com"!”
(Chris Plumridge, Playwright)

“This one is scary in a real-world way; there are so many options and drugs to alter our natures (for good or ill), and the consequences of amending one part of our natures can lead to disaster. Rachel's short play perfectly highlights the dangers of seeking "cures" for organic parts of ourselves and also for unfairly desiring others to change. A chilling piece for three actors.”
(George Sapio, Playwright)

“This sweet story takes a look at the upside of emotionality. Audience members will identify with one or the other character, and no doubt have interesting--maybe emotional!--discussions about it afterward. Lots of laughs and lots of food for thought. Thoroughly enjoyable!”
(Maripat Allen, Playwright)
