"Final Whistle"

"Final Whistle" was written as I considered how much sport can take over a persons life.

CONTENT WARNING - Swearing

Genre: Comedy

Timing: 20-30 Minutes

Synopsis:

Matt is obsessed with football. So much so that he has two commentators dedicated to the play by play of his life. However, this season there was a move that none of them saw coming, A girl moving into the flat.

Cast: 3M & 3W

Productions History:

April 2016 - Live Performed at the Exmouth One Act play Festival, Exmouth, Devon, UK

March 2016 - Performed by Broadclyst Theatre Company at Victory Hall, Broadclyst, Devon, UK

Recommendations:

“A very sweet - and sometimes sassy - short play perfectly designed for the romantic, sports-lover! Rachel Feeny-Williams tells the story in short vignettes comically narrated by a Greek chorus comprising a couple of football announcers. You will find yourself rooting for the "young player" to score as he consistently finds the ball at his feet without being entirely sure how to advance. Engaging and very well done.”

(Mike Byham, Playwright)

“Imagine having your life the subject of two sports play-by-play announcers up in the booth! In Rachel Feeny-Williams’ hands, the results are filled with laughs. The commentary as football (soccer!) fanatic Matt awkwardly addresses his feelings towards new roomie Jenny is priceless. To sum up this play in a word: Goooaaallll!!!!”

(Morey Norkin, Playwright)

“Appealing across the gender divide, this is a witty ‘Harry Met Sally’ rom com through the prism of the sports’ commentary box, all in 30 minutes. Feeny-Williams manages expertly to combine football punditry with a genuinely affecting on off romance. She also succeeds in making us care for the football commentators as more than a mere script device. This definitely would be a hit in any playwriting festival or as a short film with its touching ‘Shaun of The Dead’-type relationship humour and clever structure.”

(Alice Josephs, Playwright)

"Let's Not Talk About it"

"Let's Not Talk about it" was inspired by pubs and the idea of chat/discussions being a regular part of being in them. I thought, for this piece, I'd create a piece where chat/discussions/opinions weren't allowed.

Genre: Farce/Comedy

Timing: 10-15 Minutes

CONTENT WARNING - Swearing & sexual content

Synopsis:

Jack and Maria find themselves in a bizarre situation, in a pub where no alternative opinions are allowed!

Cast: 4m & 5w

Productions History:

June 2023 -  Live production by Chasewater Players (Cornwall, UK)

Recommendations:

“What a fun romp of a play, this is! With a cast of colorful characters and two woebegone travelers, the audience is in for a real treat visiting this English pub with an odd set of rules for patrons. Feeny-Williams clearly is having a good time telling this tale, and her humor and banter make for a delightful short play. Would love to see this on stage! Terrific piece!”

(Debbie Lamedman, Playwright)

“A terrific setup for a piece about stifling creative discourse, this play lets some colorful characters find their way back to social interaction in the best possible way, at the pub! With friends! I think the word that describes this play best is... cathartic. Read it yourself and see. Of course, that's only my opinion. Your mileage may vary. Which is precisely the point.”

(John Busser, Playwright)

“I had the ABSOLUTE pleasure of hearing this performed at our weekly Sunday meeting so the Literary and Discourse Society. SUCH A FABULOUS piece with so many wonderful opportunities for performers. I love a piece that start with the prompt, "What if...?" Pubs are normally a place for lively discussions and opinions, but not this one. It takes two strangers to "shake the joint up!" RACHEL FEENY-WILLIAMS is a true gift.”

Winners announcement from Surfside Playhouse

(August 2016)

"Meet My Boyfriend"

"Meet My Boyfriend" was written in June 2022 as part of my 'worth a thousand words' where the goal was to write a play a day inspired by a picture, which in this case was the picture you see here.

CONTENT WARNING - Swearing & prejudice.

Genre: Comedy/Drama

Timing: 10-15 Minutes

Synopsis:

Hannah is facing the nervousness of having her parents meet her boyfriend for the first time. But in this case there is something she hasn’t told them that could make things a bit…complicated.

Cast: 2M & 2W

Productions History:

July 2023 - Live production by Worcester Park Dramatic Society.

August 2022 - 2nd place in the Surfside Playhouse 10 minute play competition.

Recommendations:

“It's a delightful twist on the most potentially awkward moment in a young couple's life. Parents meeting the new person can be such a minefield in "normal" circumstances, but Feeny-Williams' creative take here is just plain fun. It's an allegory for anyone who has to deal with judgemental parents. Well done!”

(Francis RTM Boyle, Playwright)

“Lovely characters. Love the strength in the Mother. This piece has many clever things to say about the society of today, covers the points of view and makes me wanna hard slap the Father character. A fine ending and like a good Star Trek episode, leaves hope for our future!”

(Richard Kuhlman, Playwright)

“I had the great honor to read the character of Micheal in this Sunday's virtual reading. This is a very lovely play. I love the fantastical elements. Yet, the play was very grounded in reality. This gave this play the ability to give digestable commentary on social issues that are very prevalent today, and in every time period of the world. The characters are fun and relatable. I would definitely recommend a read!”

(Ethan Homeyer, Playwright)

“What a pleasure it was to experience this short play at the Sunday Literary & Discourse Society gathering. Difference religion, different race, or different species, fathers sadly do not accept their daughters choice in a partner sometimes. This creative piece speaks to differences and the prejudices that come as part of the family package.”

(Debra A. Cole, Playwright)

“Meeting the parents is always nerve racking experiences, but when faced with intense prejudice it is unbearable. Luckily, Rachel Feeny-Williams deftly navigate the scene with humour and wit.”

(Christopher Soucy, Playwright)

“A piece that I read and hoped there was more. I really liked the Mum especially. I feel in time she's going to find herself a 'new human of her own'! Sometimes its better to ask for forgiveness than permission....? But we all want the approval of our parents - even when we don't agree with any of their ideals. Took a humorous perspective of a key human need - approval.”

(Lindsey Brown, Playwright)

“A play to engage meaningful conversement. RFW once again finds the humanity in our fears and creates characters who challenge to protect what and who they are--and are challenged because of what they choose to think.”

(George Sapio, Playwright)

“In this very clever play, Rachel Feeny-Williams examines how society views “others,” and she chooses a very unusual group to identify as the “others.” In doing so, she allows strong comic elements to support the more serious point of the play. A story that leaves you with something to think about and provides some real laugh out loud moments along the way.”

(Morey Norkin, Playwright)

"Scandals and Scones"

"Scandals and Scones" was written as part of my 'words, words, words' play a day challenge in September 2021. The aim here was to write a play a day inspired by a single word and the word in this case was 'Bread'.

CONTENT WARNING - Swearing

Genre: Comedy

Timing: 15-20 Minutes

Synopsis:

A baking competition at a church fete. Nothing more harmless you’d think. Well as Jane (a newcomer to the village) is about to discover, you get a lot of scandals with the scones!

Cast: 6W & 1M

Productions History:

October 2022 - Live Production by Exton Drama Club (Devon, UK) - Recorded for YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmhFv47fXfs&list=PL3PhaNeb4ZUJWGZCo104mHQbDQkUkCqJf&index=10

May 2022 - Live Production by Chacewater Players at Chacewater Village Hall, Cornwall, UK.

Recommendations:

“I had the pleasure of hearing this read at our Sunday playwright's group. DELIGHTFUL! Rachel has the amazing gift of creating entertaining real-life situations with colorful characters that to whom all can connect. Audiences will CHEER ON the attacked and wronged and find themselves pleased with the satisfying justice Rachel always delivers.”

(Debra A. Cole, Playwright)

“This is the eighth play in Rachel Feeny-Williams's collection "My Chatter" and it's funnier than an episode of Little Britain at the village fete. The dialogue is witty and full of energy. I cannot imagine anyone not being able to relate to at least one of the cast. And the ending with the exhausted mother, god love her! Fun!”

(Nora Louise Syran, Playwright)

“A true audience pleaser and loads of fun for the right actors who thrill to quick banter. This is the judging contest we've always wanted to see. (Oh, and will be quite fun for the set designer as well!)”

(Georg Sapio, Playwright)

“This is a delightful little play with the kind of banter you love to hear to make for an amusing, fun evening of theatre. “Scandals and Scones” is witty and will put a smile on your face. RACHEL FEENY-WILLIAMS knows how to write entertaining plays, and this is just another one of her gems.”

(Jack Levine, Playwright)

“A charming piece with a decidedly sardonic edge about ladies who bake! With great roles for female actors of all ages, this twist on the traditional British village fete theme brings in tension and malfeasance, all with a large dollop of clotted cream comedy! Delicious!”

"Ladies of the colourful society" was written in June 2022 as part of my 'worth a thousand words' where the goal was to write a play a day inspired by a picture, which in this case was the picture you see here.

Genre: Comedy

Timing: 10-15 Minutes

Recommendations:

“I absolutely loved reading for this play. The use of color as adjectives and adverbs for every day things was brilliant. I think this is one of my favorite RFW plays!! I had to try not to laugh out loud when trying to read this and stay in character.”

(Rene Zabel, Playwright)

“I was sold with the line, "Oh he can Boysen my berry any day!" RACHEL FEENY-WILLIAMS is a master of color with this delightful short play. Oh, what a periwinkle group of ladies can accomplish as a committee.”

(Debra A. Cole, Playwright))

“In this bright play Rachel has given her ladies every colour in the spectrum to play with, which provides them with some very funny lines! I feel quite tangerine reading this! That aside this play is an accurate insight to the world of British amateur drama Committees. You'd be very grey to miss out on this ....”

(Christopher Plumridge, Playwright)

"The Murder is The Thing"

"The Murder is The Thing" is one of my earliest plays and was written in response to the question 'what would happen if a Private Detective lived in a village where nothing happened?'

CONTENT WARNING - Swearing and Violence

Genre: Comedy

Timing: 30-45 Minutes

Synopsis:

When Detective Jane Pierot (pronounced Poirot) finally gets her first case in three years she (and her very bored secretary) are over the moon. However, Jane soon realizes there is more to this case than meets the eye.

Cast: 1M & 4W

Productions History:

July 2017 - Performed by by Broadclyst Theatre Group at Victory Hall, Broadclyst, Devon, UK

April 2017 - Performed by Exton Drama Club at the Exton Village Hall, Devon, UK (Recorded for their website - https://extondramaclub.co.uk/2017/05/26/the-murder-is-the-thing/

Recommendations:

“This felt.. real. A successful amateur theatre playwright moves to London to write a gritty and emotional new play. It takes a nemesis to enable Rachel to dig deep and find what is real. This piece should be expanded to a full length show - so many opportunities for conflict, discovery, and honesty. RACHEL FEENY-WILLIAMS' talent for writing dialogue that moves without effort is a true gift."

(Debra A. Cole, Playwright)

“My God, this was a riveting piece to read. As writers, we've all felt the panic of the blank page. Rachel Feeny-Williams is probably no exception (though sometimes I think she has made a deal with the Devil for non-stop inspiration) but she powers through and produces work of such high quality, that you'd never know it. The characters here feel like they stepped out of real life and I defy you not to get caught up in their needs and desires. This was wonderful and gets my highest recommendation!”

(John Busser, Playwright)

“I’m already a fan of Rachel Feeny-Williams’ work, but just like the Rachel who is the central character in this play, Feeny-Williams seems to have found some new inspiration to take her work to another level! Not something I ever thought was needed or possible! The story and characters are all brimming with gritty realism. And to think this was written in a day! This is truly deserving of a production!”

(Morey Norkin, Playwright)

“Hats off to Rachel for writing this great play in just one day. It reflects the story perfectly. Gritty and at times darkly funny, this play gives a respectful nod to the film Withnail and I. Putting two contrasting writers and personalities in a confined space and wait for a miracle is a tall order, do they succeed? The twist at the end caught me somewhat by surprise too. A great piece of which to have a lot of fun staging.”

"Tidy Away My Soul" was written as part of my 'words, words, words' play a day challenge in September 2021. The aim here was to write a play a day inspired by a single word and the word in this case was 'Tidy'.

Genre: Comedy

Timing: 10-15 Minutes

Synopsis:

Cast: 2M & 3W

Productions History:

July 2022 - Live Production by Next Generation Theatre Company in Cullompton (Devon, UK)

Recommendations:

“This is a comedy that is well constructed but not predictable. Feeny-Williams has created a very funny short play with a Noel Coward vibe but also contemporary. In its clever, thought-provoking way, it makes us ponder how memories haunt us, even when an actual ghost is doing his best to take control of his widow’s thoughts and actions. Nicely done!”

(Andrew Martineau, Playwright)

“Oh, what a state of affairs! Alison wants to move-on five years after her husband died. But the ghost of her husband won’t have it and is determined to stop her. “Tidy Away My Soul” is fun and witty, and a sure audience pleaser.”

(Jack Levine, Playwright)

“This is the ninth and penultimate play in Rachel Feeny-Williams's collection of short comedies: "My Chatter" and it's one of my favorites. With a "Blithe Spirit" feel to it, nonetheless Williams carves her very own path and it's delightful. The energy is anything but "unbalanced"-- well done!”

(Nora Louise Syran, Playwright)

“I have just had the pleasure of listening in on a zoom reading of this short play, a great way to bring the story to life....and death in this case. To tidy away a soul since departed proves harder than expected in this case, this ghost isn't going anywhere and does his best to scupper his widows plans, to great comic effect! I see this as having the potential to be a weekly TV sketch show, as there are so many fun scenarios to play with in this set up! Great fun!”

(Christopher Plumridge, Playwright)

“With a Truly, Madly, Deeply sort of feel to it, Tidy Away My Soul has charm and perfect comic timing. Letting go is hard, and Ferny-Williams beautifully touches on the challenges of moving forward after the loss of a spouse. I would love to see this performed. Such wonderful opportunities for a cast to shine.”

Recommendations:

“Rachel Feeny-Williams' "Would You?" is such a nuanced and intriguing play. I put on this play for my directorial debut, and I could not have chosen a better narrative. Every single event creates a heightened sense of depth in every aspect – every single thing contributes to the story. Grappling with intense themes of sacrifice, merit, and selfishness in a careful and engaging way, Feeny-Williams offers brilliant commentary on the human condition. "Would You?" is both a phenomenal piece of literature that truly understands its narrative and characters, as well as an immersive experience for the audience or reader.”

(K'Lynn Hocker, Director of The Kinkaid School Production)

“RACHEL FEENY-WILLIAMS wrote a most interesting short play. Three people have had lives very different than they would have liked. This piece raises the what-if question of all time, so to speak: How much are you willing to sacrifice to get what you want? “Would You?” will captivate audiences and have them talking about this marvelous work after they leave the theater.”

(Jack Levine, Playwright)

“What begins as the modern retelling of the Faustian legend - selling one's soul to the devil - turns with a pair of new twists to heighten the intrigue. Would You? is both clever and well-written. Recommended.”

Adrift.gif

"Adrift"

"Adrift" was written as part of my 'Lets Write' playa  day challenge in April 2021. The aim here was to write a piece inspired by a GIF and the GIF in question was the one you see here.

Genre: Drama

Timing: 20-30 Minutes

Synopsis:

A group of friends, attempting to enjoy a nice day at the beach together suddenly have a turn when they find an unconscious girl a drift in a boat.

Cast: 3M & 3W (1 Non-speaking)

Productions History:

July 2022 - Performed by Upstage Lights of Billingham, County Durham, UK.

Recommendations:

““Adrift” by Rachel Feeny-Williams is a one-act play that captures the essence of a beachside setting and the complexities of relationships. The characters are young and vibrant, and each brings a unique dynamic to the narrative. The dialogue is natural and flows effortlessly, revealing the characters’ personalities and the underlying tensions. The play’s setting is a character in itself, providing a backdrop for the unfolding drama. Feeny-Williams’ writing style is engaging, making “Adrift” a compelling piece that would resonate with audiences, especially those who appreciate the nuances of friendship and the healing power of nature. It’s a refreshing”

(Tom Erb, Playwright)

“Friend groups aren't the easiest thing to write, and the one in this play has a lovely, lived-in quality, where each character feels distinct. It feels like these characters are on the cusp of change, cracks starting to show in their group, the loss of innocence amplified by the presence of the young, imaginative Katie, who makes a great foil for the adults' squabbling.”

(Conor McShane, Playwright)

“I love the rabbit hole that this group of friends do down when they discover the unconscious girl in the boat. Is she a mermaid or alien? Or on the run from gangsters. Our imaginations have certainly grown with the influx of streaming data at our fingertips and eyes, but what I love most about this mysterious and comedic play is the how they all come together in the end to solve the puzzle, even a couple who have recently split up, proving that friendship is one of the strongest bonds out there.”

(Lee R. Lawing, Playwright)

“Adrift is full of comedy and then, mystery. (Mystery loves company...) The characters are typical 20-somethings, navigating relationships, making attempts at being responsible, and trying to find out why there's an unconscious woman floating alone in a boat in the sea. Though we are never told the reason (part two is coming, perhaps?), there's enough speculation, some logical, some wild, to give the characters and audience much to think about. The situation is set up very well, with excellent detail, and the characters all have specific characteristics that set them apart from each other. Well crafted and hope it's produced!”

(Bruce Karp, Playwright)

“"Adrift" starts as a fun dramedy about a group of friends navigating the fallout of a couple's failed relationship and ends with an intriguing mystery that leaves you wanting more. It is, at its heart, a play about relationships and boundaries. It's about personal recovery after being set adrift in life when a relationship ends. The truth of the characters really shines when they spot a boat containing a deep mystery adrift offshore. "Adrift" is a fun contemporary mystery that raises more questions than answers and gives permission to the audience to come to their own conclusions.”

"Happy Holidays?"

Happy Holidays was written in December 2022 in response to a thought I had about giving the holidays personalities, and by extension characters.

CONTENT WARNING - Swearing, drinking & sexual references

Genre: Comedy

Timing: 15-20 Minutes

Synopsis:

Anna of Happy Holidays Inc. is having a particularly stressful time of year trying to make sure the holidays are ready for just the right time of year.

Cast: 5W & 3M

Productions History:

Recommendations:

“We think of the seasons and holidays of the year as having characteristics, but who knew they were real personages with real and sometimes rebellious personalities? Yes, there is a manager attempting to keep them in line but her efforts only lead to frustration for her and great amusement for the audience. Everyone involved in a production of this should have a great time, not only the actors but the designers as well. Rachel Feeny-Williams's creative mind is a strange and wonderful place.”

(Donald E. Baker, Playwright)

“SO CREATIVE! RACHEL FEENY-WILLIAMS bring seasons and holidays to life in a hilarious look at what it takes for the world to go 'round. I was honoured to bring BLACK FRIDAY to life in all of her mania in a Sunday playwriting group, and I HAD A BLAST! Run... don't walk to place this on the holiday festival schedule. Audiences will LOVE IT!”

(Debra A. Cole, Playwright)

“In Rachel Feeny-Williams' imaginative depiction, the seasons and holidays come to life as relatable characters with unique personalities and ambitions. It's a delightful spectacle to witness Anna's attempt at handling the chaos. The theatrical staging adds an extra layer of enjoyment to the experience. The spotlight is undeniably stolen by Black Friday, while the clever intertwining of Valentine's Day and Halloween is so fun. The play is skilfully constructed, gradually building up tension from the beginning. What a refreshing, fun addition to any holiday festival!”

(Dana Hall, Playwright)

“Truly a play for all seasons and holidays! Managing the seasons and holidays is a challenge for any of us, but imagine, as Rachel has done brilliantly, that it’s actually someone’s job! And when seasons and holidays have their own personalities and grievances, well, the laughs are as plentiful as a bagful of Halloween treats or an over stuffed Christmas stocking! This should be destined to become a year round holiday classic!”

(Morey Norkin, Playwright)

“So this is what happens if you personify the seasons and its holidays! Poor Anna stuck in the middle of all this melee as one by one each holiday or season tests her patience with their own over inflated egos! And it's a sign of the times that even Black Friday gets a role, poor Black Friday has to go back out, the day after Thanksgiving has over indulged, for one day more....
Great fun with several deeper meanings. Nice!”
